EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HAIR TOPPERS!!!

We would like to share with you everything you need to know about hair toppers, such as what they are, who they are for, and how to style them. Please consult with The Wig Dr. Wig Professionals before buying a topper. Education is key!!!

What are hair toppers? Hair toppers are a very popular subject lately, there's a good reason for that. They are lightweight and easy to use and they are excellent for adding volume to the top of your head by simply clipping into your hair. Hair toppers come in different styles and sizes, lengths, and thicknesses. They can be made from synthetic heat-defiant fiber or real human hair.

What are they for? Hair toppers are a great solution for women with hair thinning or hair loss on the crown and top of their head, but not only that, hair toppers are great for women that have fine or flat hair, because it gives you much more hair volume and coverage on top.

How are they different from wigs? Wigs are designed to cover your whole head of hair. Your hair will be hidden under the cap and the hair of the wig will be on show. This is different for hair toppers, which have a smaller base of the hair that can clip onto an area of your head. Hair toppers are excellent to cover hair thinning on the crown or the front area of your head. Hair toppers blend with your own hair and look very natural because your own hair is on show too. Therefore it is important to get a hair topper with the same hair color as yours (unless it is a very large base size in which case the hair doesn't have to match perfectly) for perfect blending. They are great for doing different hairstyles. When you wear a hair topper, they are light to wear and not as bulky as wigs.

What are toppers made of? Hair toppers are made from monofilament, lace, or a silk base. The base can vary in different sizes, they can be it can be 1.3”x3”, 5”x5”, 10”x10”, and anywhere in between. They also can come in different lengths, and different thicknesses as well. Hair toppers if human hair is usually hand-made by workers and can take about two weeks to create, can be parted in any direction, and looks very natural.

How do I choose a topper for me? It is important you know how much hair thinning and hair loss you have. Take a measuring tape and measure your hair loss area from front to back and side to side. Be sure to add an extra inch to each measurement, and then this will be the base size you need. Again, I strongly suggest that you consult with your wig professional.

How do I style my hair topper? Usually, if human hair toppers are being styled into the same shape repeatedly, they develop memory and naturally fall into that style. The best way to style them is to put them on a mannequin head, spray them with water, comb them through, hair dry them into place, apply a heat protecting spray, straighten them or curl them in the style you like, and then you can clip it on your head to style the way that you want to wear your hair.

What is the hair return? You may notice that your hair topper has some short hairs on the top. You may think that this is damage or breakage. This is called the hair return. The hair return is necessary for the hair topper creation process. Usually, 18-inch hair toppers are made from 22-inch long hair, then this piece is looped through the topper base and the four inches are left on top. This actually gives you more volume on top and leaves the ends tapered for easy blending. The hair return can easily be blended with the rest of your hair just by using heat-protecting spray or water and a comb. Straightening the area with a flat iron is also very effective.

How do I wash and care for my hair toppers? Your hair topper doesn't need to be washed as often as your own hair. We recommend you wash your hair topper once every 2 weeks. You may think that is too long to go without washing your hair topper, but your hair topper doesn't need to be washed as often. This is because the topper hair doesn't collect oils from your scalp like your own hair does, so it doesn't get greasy. If you wash your topper as often as you wash your own hair, it will dry your topper's hair out and reduce its longevity. For example, if you went on vacation, you wouldn't need to wash your hair topper until you got back, because it would have collected dust and different air pollutants in the air.

How long do hair toppers last? Your hair topper can last you anywhere from six months to over a year with daily wear and if you take good care of it. You can prolong the life of your hair topper by storing it in a box when you're not wearing it (which will prevent it from collecting dust) and also using sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners. Sulfate-free products will protect the hair from drying out as it doesn't strip oils from the hair. Using deep conditioners, leave-in conditioners and serums regularly will help the hair to stay soft, as it is not being nourished by your scalp oils like your own hair is.

Can I dye my hair topper to match my hair? If you go with a human hair topper in the exact shade of natural black, you can bleach it lighter than you like. If your hair topper is another shade, we suggest you only dye it darker but never bleach it. If you are not a professional then please consult one before attempting any coloring as the origin of the hair matters and if the topper is pre-dyed.

How much does a hair topper The price of hair toppers depends on how large the base is, how long the hair topper hair is, and how thick the topper's hair density is. It also depends if the topper is synthetic or human hair which is more expensive. Make an appointment with your wig professional and beware of looking for “the cheapest option on Amazon.”
